Consumer confidence picks up globally, but remains negative

North American consumers led the way, followed by their counterparts in Japan and northern Europe, as global consumer confidence picked up in the first quarter, according to a Nielsen survey. Nonetheless, the overall reading of 93, up two points from the fourth quarter, remained firmly on pessimistic ground, below the neutral level of 100.
