Herschel Space Observatory goes dark after running out of fuel

The Herschel Space Observatory has gone dark after using up its supply of liquid helium coolant. The world's largest infrared space telescope has spent four years sending back more than 35,000 scientific observations and 25,000 hours of data. "Herschel gave us the opportunity to peer into the dark and cold regions of the universe that are invisible to other telescopes," said NASA's John Grunsfeld.
