Prenatal lithium use linked to pregnancy complications

A study in The American Journal of Psychiatry found women who took lithium during pregnancy had a higher risk of miscarriage, preterm delivery and cardiovascular abnormalities than those who were not exposed to lithium. The study included about 1,000 women. Researchers supported screening with fetal echocardiography and level-2 ultrasound for women treated with lithium.
