Surgeon chooses palliative care to help patients, himself

Palliative care takes the philosophy of end-of-life care back to the days before life-saving advances in medical technology created the feeling that death should be fought to the end, Dr. Tim Thomsen, interim director of palliative care at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, says during this interview. "We have a huge generation of physicians who I think have lulled themselves into thinking that death is not going to occur," he says. Thomsen said he transitioned into palliative care to help people make sense of complicated medical choices and for his own spirituality.
