Planned retirement community explores new possibilities

The key to the planned BOOM retirement community near Palm Springs, Calif., is not comfort and convenience for the senior years but an experiment and challenge -- with a variety of innovative architecture that appeals to retirees and their outdoor spirit and unwillingness to settle for isolation or the ordinary. "I really believe that there are no 'elderly.' There is just me and you, in the later time of our life, with our diversity of interests and activities," said Matthias Hollwich, co-founder of HWKN, an architectural firm that has been exploring how architecture can help older people.
