Doctors use fat stem cells to treat heart failure

Doctors at the Scripps Clinic have treated a patient with heart failure using stem cells taken from the patient's fat. The treatment is part of the Athena clinical trial. It may take six months to determine whether the therapy has led to any improvement, a doctor said. The Athena trial aims to eventually include 45 patients with heart failure and coronary artery disease who have run out of treatment options.
