Strategies underway to help students complete community college

Two initiatives being piloted on campuses across the country are aimed at helping more community-college students finish their degrees, according to recent conference presentations. Completion by Design, a five-year effort being supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is targeting improved completion rates among low-income community-college students by providing mandatory student advising and structured course sequences. Jobs for the Future, a nonprofit effort also supported by the foundation, aims to expedite the placement of students in credit-bearing -- rather than remedial -- courses.
