Federal government investigates 55 colleges over sexual assault cases

The U.S. Department of Education is investigating 55 colleges and universities across the country over their handling of sexual assault complaints. Officials on Thursday made public the list of schools under investigation for violating Title IX, which prohibits gender discrimination. "We are making this list available in an effort to bring more transparency to our enforcement work and to foster better public awareness of civil rights," Catherine E. Lhamon, assistant education secretary for civil rights, said.
