NICU reduces unplanned extubations by changing safety culture

Researchers at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital found educating staff and making quality improvements helped reduce unplanned extubations in NICU patients, and they suggested a benchmark should be less than 1 unplanned extubation per 100 patient-intubated days. The study, published in the journal Pediatrics, found changing the safety culture of the unit was a big factor in reducing unplanned extubations.
