Study: Porcine tissue acts as "homing device" for muscle regrowth

Treatment with porcine tissue and intensive physical therapy encouraged substantial regrowth of leg muscle in five patients with large leg muscle wounds, doctors reported in the journal Science Translational Medicine. The scar tissue that fills large wounds often causes potentially disabling loss of function, said study leader Stephen Badylak, deputy director of the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. The porcine tissue-based extracellular matrix released peptides that attracted the patients' own stem cells, promoting healing, Badylak said.
