Exercise, new surgery are alternatives to spinal fusion

Treatment efforts for lower back pain have long resorted to the solution of spinal fusion, which can give rise to new problems such as stiffness and surgical complications, but better options are emerging in the form of potentially better surgery and a new emphasis on the role of exercise. The surgery uses a recently approved artificial disc called Charite, and growing evidence indicates aggressive exercise and cognitive therapy can be just as beneficial as fusion.
