U.S. Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., is sponsoring a bill called the Teaching Geography is Fundamental Act to correct what he says is a lack of focus on geography in schools. Under the proposed legislation, funds would be allocated for teacher training and other expenses associated with teaching geography. "We are now in a world where we have to compete globally," Van Hollen said. "It's important for American students to understand the geography of the world they are living in."
