Apple, Google compete by expanding portfolio

Google's announced acquisition of BumpTop, a maker of display technology for desktop computers, marks the latest in a series of deals Google and Apple have completed as their rivalry in the smartphone and application arenas heats up, say industry observers. They point to BumpTop's potential use for Android-powered smartphone and tablet devices. Apple bought two companies last week -- mobile-app startup Siri and Intrinsity, a chip designer.
