BP's corporate image will be compromised by the Deepwater Horizon oil leak threatening wildlife and jobs in the Gulf of Mexico; the only question is how much, writes Carter Dougherty. In the worst-case scenario, the leak could short-circuit the economic recovery and besmirch BP's reputation for decades, Dougherty writes. However, if the company reacts swiftly to competently address the crisis, it could recover quickly, allowing Wall Street to incorporate the costs into earnings estimates and the public to turn its attention elsewhere.
