CFTC's Gensler scrutinizes Clinton administration on derivatives

Gary Gensler, chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, says President Bill Clinton's administration should have stepped up regulation of the derivatives market. "Looking back now, knowing what we know now -- and a lot has developed over the last 10 years -- I think we ought to have done more. Some of the basic assumptions about these marketplaces have proved out to be wrong," said Gensler, who worked at the Treasury Department from 1997 to 2001.
