Sea lions are tested for leptospirosis

Researchers from the California-based Marine Mammal Center have been sampling sea lions on the West Coast for leptospirosis, a disease that causes kidney and liver damage and death in some cases. Last fall, an outbreak in sea lions occurred in Astoria, Ore., and researchers hope to identify infected animals before they migrate down the coast to mate.
