Study: SPECT/CT helps improve treatment plan for thyroid cancer

SPECT/CT improved postsurgical staging in 21% of thyroid cancer patients, changed the treatment plan for 36% of them and prevented unneeded radiation treatment in 20% of patients without cancer, according to a study published in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine. Results on scans conducted before radioiodine treatment also allowed for modification of sodium iodide I-131 treatment in 58% of patients, the study said. The findings indicate that SPECT/CT as part of postoperative care can help guide treatment plans involving radioiodine therapy, as well as aid in the long-term strategy for patients, researchers said.
