Surname mapping highlights migrations in China

Researchers have mapped the distribution of surnames across China. They found there were many surnames in common between the province of Shandong and provinces in the country's northeast, which may be due to a large migration between the areas. "We are surprised that famous large-scale migrations can be shown by such simple calculations," said study co-author Jiawei Chen.
