Philanthropists fund engineering as public funds fade

With public support dwindling, major donors stepped up last year to back engineering programs at universities across the country, with a top 10 list amounting to nearly a quarter of a billion dollars, as tallied by The Chronicle of Philanthropy. Leading the list were two $50 million donations. Oracle Chairman Jeff Henley and his wife, Judy, gave $50 million to the University of California at Santa Barbara's Institute for Energy Efficiency and College of Engineering. Eugene M. Lang gave $50 million to help build new engineering and science facilities and programs at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania.
