Policies needed to bring electricity, stoves to emerging nations

Policies are needed to achieve a U.N. goal to provide universal access to clean cooking stoves and electricity by 2030, say researchers at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg, Austria. The study predicts that by 2030, as many as 810 million people in South and Pacific Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa will remain without electricity and many more will continue to use dangerous traditional stoves. "The scale of investment required is small from a global perspective," said lead author Shonali Pachauri.
