Competing electronic cart devices compared at FMI Show

IBM introduced a shopping buddy device on grocery carts at the Food Marketing Institute show in Chicago this week, which is similar to the Concierge product from Springboard Retail Networks Inc. Both operate on a miniature version of GPS systems to help shoppers find items and keep a tally of what is in the cart, and will require significant investment from grocers. An FMI spokesperson notes both products fit consumer trends that include a growing preferences for self-checkout stands.
