Army Corps proceeds with plans for New Orleans pump stations

The Army Corps of Engineers plans to move ahead with building pump stations in three New Orleans canals at a cost of $800 million. Residents and state coastal officials protested the Corps' plan as "inferior protection" because it relies on a dual pumping system. The Corps had also considered a $3.4 billion option that would rely on single pumping stations in each canal but did not have enough funds to proceed.
