Can WiMAX provide open-source solution for smart grids?

WiMAX will provide an inexpensive, open-source method of spreading smart-meter software technology to homes, according to Ray Bell, who asserts that the Intel WiMAX chip his Grid Net startup firm is deploying will be cheap enough within 18 months to undercut the price of smart-meter systems using proprietary technologies.
