Retailers increasingly embrace private label

As retailers such as Safeway, Wal-Mart and Schnuck's are putting more and more emphasis on private-label products, Safeway CEO Steve Burd told analysts he was calling on brands to lower prices. "Shoppers are making purchasing decisions through the lens of affordability," one consultant said. "It's all about stretching the dollar."
