San Diego parks director redesigns lawn to save water

Stacey LoMedico, the San Diego city parks director, gave her office lawn in Balboa Park a water-conservation makeover. City employees ripped out the grass and laid a pathway of mulch and gravel winding through drought-resistant plants. "These plants will convey a relaxing, evergreen, woodland-garden effect while using a fraction of the water and maintenance expenses that a traditional lawn would require," said LoMedico.
