The breakdown of food-label claims and regulations

Some claims made on food labels are regulated by federal guidelines, but others are just empty phrases, nutrition experts say. The FDA regulates four different types of claims: nutrient content, health claims, qualified health claims and structure/function claims. Buzz words such as "natural" and "whole grain" are not regulated.
