Hiring, pay remain flat as spending, manufacturing post gains

Manufacturing and consumer spending are showing improvement, but the U.S. recovery might be feeble if hiring and pay don't improve, economists said. Factory production in April marked its fastest expansion in nearly six years, the Institute for Supply Management said. Consumer spending increased the biggest amount in five months in March, but most of the money came from savings, not rising income, the Commerce Department said. Economists predicted that the unemployment rate is holding steady at 9.7%.
