18F-NaF-PET/CT can help ID active plaque

A University of Edinburgh study found higher 18F-sodium fluoride PET/CT uptake in patients with coronary atherosclerosis than in patients in the control group, and this uptake correlated with coronary calcium score. The 40 patients with higher 18F-NaF activity in their coronaries also had experienced cardiovascular events and angina at higher rates, and they displayed higher Framingham risk scores, according to the study. The results indicate that PET/CT with 18F-NaF can enhance the risk-prediction capability of coronary calcium scores, researchers said.
