Hospitals are improving efficiency and patient care by opening hybrid operating rooms that are big enough to accommodate a wider range of procedures and diagnostics. The OR at Travis Air Force Base in California, designed for cardiac and vascular surgery, has radiology and cardiac catheterization labs, so rather than sending patients to the ICU after surgery, cardiologists have the tools they need to treat them on the spot.
