The same ICU technology that saves lives can help terminally ill patients die gently in the hospital, writes Dr. Ishani Ganguli, a first-year resident at Massachusetts General Hospital. She says during her time in the ICU she found it odd but fitting that patients who died "did so calmly, deliberately, and -- in that moment of transcendence -- hidden from the gaze of medical personnel."
