Lufthansa, EU carriers deepen cost cuts after losses

Lufthansa said it plans to cut 3,500 administrative jobs as the airline reported a $522.4 million loss in the first quarter. High fuel prices, low demand and rising taxes have hurt Lufthansa and other European airlines. Swedish carrier SAS also said it would make additional cuts after it reported a first-quarter loss of $108.2 million, and Danish airline Cimber Sterling was forced to declare bankruptcy.
