Prenatal use of anti-HIV drug tenofovir seems safe for babies

The use of the anti-HIV drug Viread or tenofovir during pregnancy seems safe for infants, according to an NIH study of 2,000 infants born to HIV-positive mothers in the U.S. from 2003 to 2010. Infants whose pregnant mothers took the drug were not shorter and did not weigh less than those born to mothers who did not receive the medication, researchers wrote in the journal AIDS.
