Studies identify "diversity gap" among teachers, students

Recent studies from the Center for American Progress and the National Education Association have identified a wide "diversity gap" among teachers and their students. Data show that 82% of elementary- and secondary-school teachers in the U.S. in 2012 were white, and 7% were African American, while minority students make up about 48% of the student population. The two groups say that more must be done to recruit teachers from diverse backgrounds.
