Device helps monitor specific water needs

ET Water Systems has developed a SmartBox that can determine how much water is needed for a certain landscape based on specific data and local weather. A new version of the device will be available this summer and will be able to get firmware upgrades over its current cell network. The irrigation systems, which can serve as a replacement for commercial-scale irrigation controllers, cost about $2,000 installed and the payback is around two years, one company executive says.
