Freight by rail saves American consumers billions: AAR

Freight rail is a highly efficient industry that is essential to the U.S. economy and to economic recovery, writes AAR President and CEO Edward Hamberger. He writes that U.S. railroads essentially save American consumers the roughly $70 billion a year that would be spent if all freight were moved by truck instead. Rail rates fell 55% between 1981 and 2009, he adds.
