Inflammation may cause bowel symptoms in IBD patients

Low-grade inflammation may be the cause of irritable bowel symptoms in patients whose inflammatory bowel disease is in remission, a study in the American Journal of Gastroenterology found. Researchers measured fecal calprotectin, a marker for colonic inflammation, and found the symptoms reflected ongoing IBD activity and not true irritable bowel syndrome.
