Air Force experimental aircraft breaks hypersonic flight record

Boeing's X-51A Waverider flew for 3.5 minutes at five times the speed of sound -- the longest hypersonic flight made by an aircraft powered by jet fuel. The U.S. Air Force flew the unmanned aircraft at a top speed of Mach 5.1. "All we have learned from the X-51A Waverider will serve as the bedrock for future hypersonics research and ultimately the practical application of hypersonic flight," said program director Charlie Brink.
