Cracks in glass can reveal how fast an object was traveling

Cracks in glass can help scientists determine the speed of the object that hit it. French researchers at Aix-Marseille University discovered a relationship between the cracks and a projectile's speed after firing small metal cylinders from an air gun at different speeds at glass plates. They created an equation to calculate projectile speed. "For forensics, you could use this to find the energy of a bullet," said Robert Ritchie, a materials scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California.
