USDA rescinds policy expanding Canadian beef imports

The United States Department of Agriculture yesterday reversed a policy shift it published just ten days ago that would have allowed the expanded importation of beef products from Canada. USDA, acknowledging it did not follow proper regulatory procedure, said it would comply with a preliminary injunction handed down by a federal judge in Montana who called the agency's actions "troubling." The Ranchers Cattlemen Action Legal Fund filed suit to reverse the USDA move on the grounds the agency was ignoring its own efforts to protect the U.S. food supply from BSE.
