Layoff news belies fact that millions of jobs are open, being filled

Although the rising unemployment rates are dismal, news reports about layoffs mask the positive sign that millions of people are being hired, especially in hospitals, colleges, discount stores, restaurants and on public works projects. "You're facing more competition for every job you apply for, but the reality is there is a lot of hiring going on," says Andrew M. Sum, director of Northeastern University's Center for Labor Market Studies.
