Seattle transit tunneling creates underground voids

Tunneling work for Sound Transit has created underground holes when the boring equipment hit pockets of sand. Seattle homeowner Christine Panganiban discovered a 21-feet-deep hole in her front yard due to the tunneling. Six other voids were discovered in the area, known as Beacon Hill. Soil studies have just started on the tunnel that will replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct, where soft-fill soil will pose a problem in at least one area.
