Research projects take aim at breed-specific cancer rates

Most pure dog breeds have illnesses and conditions that hit them harder than other breeds -- for golden retrievers, it's cancer. About 60% of goldens die of cancer, twice the average for all breeds combined. While pet owners can take some steps to mitigate environmental factors, new research projects are studying genetic links in efforts to cut the cancer rate.
