Shell, WRI strike $1.12M joint research venture

Shell International Exploration and Production and the Western Research Institute have struck a $1.12 million joint research venture to promote asphaltene characterization technologies. Asphaltenes "can cause deposits and fouling during production, pipeline transport and refinery processing," said John Schabron, WRI's principal scientist. WRI has patented an "asphaltene determinator" that distinguishes and separates oil's asphaltenic parts into subfractions to enhance the market value and properties of the resource, he said.
