20% of U.S. youths at risk for suicide live in homes with guns

Almost 20% of 524 10- to 21-year-olds who were taken to emergency departments for physical or psychiatric problems said there is a firearm in their home, U.S. researchers reported at the Pediatric Academic Societies meeting. Furthermore, 15% of these young people knew how to access both the firearm and bullets. Doctors are encouraged to ask families about guns inside the house as well as discuss measures that would keep children safe, AAP President Thomas McInerny said.
