MRSA strain found repeatedly in 25% of veterinarians tested

Livestock veterinarians commonly carry a strain of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus known as CC398, according to a Dutch study that collected samples from the oropharynx and anterior nares of 137 participating veterinarians. "The mean prevalence of MRSA CC398 carriage was 44%, and for S. aureus, the prevalence was 72%," researchers wrote, noting about one-quarter of individuals tested were always found to harbor the pathogen.
