Proposed Tier 3 rules include E30-promotion plan

Tucked in the Environmental Protection Agency's proposed Tier 3 sulfur-reduction standard is a proposal to promote the use of E30 in cars optimized to run on ethanol. Using E30 in vehicles optimized for the fuel would cut greenhouse-gas emissions and boost fuel economy because the blend is cleaner and has a higher octane rating than regular gasoline, experts said. To encourage automakers to embrace the plan, the EPA is proposing to give them the option of having their vehicles certified for E30.
