Wis. bioenergy center widens research in biomass-based fuel

The Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, whose five-year, $125 million federal grant was renewed by the Department of Energy, has been widening its biofuel research to noncrop feedstocks. "We've sort of thought more about how we can take biomaterials and move them into the nation's energy supply," said Steve Pueppke of AgBioResearch. One of the goals is to sidestep the food-versus-fuel debate by focusing on the development of biomass-based fuel, he said.
