The cost of China's coal-to-gas plants

To combat urban smog, China is processing huge amounts of coal into cleaner-burning methane gas for use in its booming cities. Only one problem: the coal-to-gas process releases more carbon than simply burning coal. "They're going to lock in emissions. China — and the world — will bear the consequences for decades," warns Stanford energy expert Robert Jackson.
