Mass. commission to call for set payment for providers

A Massachusetts commission is expected to recommend a change in the way physicians and hospitals are paid, dropping the current fee-for-service method. The commission is expected to recommend that providers be paid a set yearly payment for each patient that covers all care provided to that individual, rather than having a negotiated payment for each visit or procedure. The single-fee structure is designed to discourage physicians and hospitals from ordering unneeded tests and treatments and encourage more coordination.
