When a pet owner in southeast Missouri commits a crime, the animal isn't destined for the streets, thanks to law enforcement officials who ensure the pets are looked after. Usually, animals are placed with a relative of the offender. Otherwise, they're admitted to animal shelters or temporarily housed with veterinarians. "Most people, their animals are like their kids. I know mine are," said Lt. Direk Hunt, interim police chief in Perryville, Mo. "We would not want to do anything to cause pain and suffering."
